All I can say is; WOW I can't believe how the time has flown. I am having an extremely good time with this show, the director and my fellow cast members are amazing. this show will seriously ROCK! I think that just about covers it. the music in this show is fantastic, everyone I know who is familiar with the show loves it. the show runs Oct 15-31. Perfect for Halloween. I realise that I am a bit crazy doing a show while in school. because rehearsals usually run late I am mildly sleep deprived at this point, and it will probably get worse. But it's so worth it. I find it very interesting how something can be so time consuming, so exhausting, and sometimes so stressful, and at the same time be the best way to unwind. Theater is strange like that.

Now to address those dumbfounded looks:

Yes Jekyll and Hyde is a musical.

No, I do not play Jekyll or Hyde

Yes, they are played by the same person

No, it's not a Comedy...it's a drama, a Gothic thriller to be more specific. think Les miserables, Scarlet Pimpernel, or Sweeney Todd. that should give you an idea about the tone of the show

No, It's not for kids. that's not to say it's an 'Adult' show. it's just dark, intense, and has some violent scenes (think the above mentioned shows...)

Yes, you should come see it. seriously. you won't be disappointed

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://dtomlinson.blogspot.com/2009/09/jekyll-and-hyde-musical.html' title='Jekyll and Hyde... (sure makes it tough to play though)

Hello, hello, and welcome to another exciting installment of Daniel's underloved, and underupdated blog. It's been a while. but fear not all 3 of my faithful readers (okay, that's giving myself way too much credit). I am still alive, and am back from summer vacation, so now it's back to blogging.

...Okay I admit, I am not really 'back' because I didn't go anywhere. Nope, no camping, no sight seeing, no traveling. my summer Vacation was spent in good old Utah County. Now I'm not complaining mind you, I had a very enjoyable summer. just not too eventful. so here is the rundown:

I had a few classes over the summer semester including; Illustration, International Ballroom Dance, Voice Lessons, Music Theory, and Piano Lessons. it was a good semester, but I must admit I struggled a bit with the illustration class. Despite being an Art major, I am not the most talented or motivated artist (which is why I have not posted any art online in a long time).

Aside from school, I worked at Thanksgiving point, and occasionally for Woogi World. The remainder of my time was filled with Longboarding and occasionally Video games. this may come as a huge shock to some of my good friends and family members, but yes only occasional video games, I find that they just don't hold my interest like they used to... must be getting old or something.

So there You have it! the super exciting overview of my super exciting summer! wow, I bet you all wish that you were me!

Thanks for reading. more udates to come!Tomlinsons in their natural habitat... Actually from my brother's birthday, spent just the way he wanted it; hanging with his siblings playing video games. now that's what I call quality time together!

My Monsterous Weekend!

monstrous (mŏn'strəs)
-adj.
1. The Talks are always seem to be just for me, and I love spending time with my family, and just taking it easy for a weekend. when I was younger, my mom would come up with great crafts and activities to keep us kids quiet and content durring the 4 sessions, and while I have learned to love the talks, it's still fun to do a little project while watching. this years project was sock monsters!

Farewell to an old friend

I have some somewhat sad news to blog today; I lost a close friend. Yeah, somewhere between my class at one end of campus, and my car parked at the other I dropped my hat, it was sticking out of my back pocket and somehow got dropped somewhere, I retraced my steps, but to no avail... Wait you all thought I was going to be talking about a person? Well, thankfully no.

Some may not realize this, but this is no ordinary hat, this was a courduroy brown flat cap. a hat that has been on my head almost every other day for the past 2 years or so. True I have two more at home that are similar in style, but this one was the best.

Well, sad day. but I'm over it. In my distress I stopped in at Target to see if they had a similar style, but -no surprise- no such luck. So as a consolation bought a pinstriped dark grey fedora (hooray for the clearance rack!). it gives my head a whole new look.

Ah, how I love a good random blog post.

thanks for stopping by my blog, and until next time;
Stay happy and remember to recycle!

Simple joys, and random happenings

Now that school has started, it's time for things to get crazy hectic and stressful. sometimes I need to take time to recognise simple pleasures in my life. Like the smell of new books, and new art supplies, and the smell of new shoes.

I have been getting to know all those things quite well lately, I have bought hundreds of dollars worth of books and supplies this semester, and I even bought myself new shoes! yup I bought a pair of Chuck Taylors. i don't think I've had those shoes since I was in elementary school. I guess some things never go out of style.

Last weekend I got to go downtown to see the Bodyworlds Exhibit. it was SPECTACULAR! I am so amazed by the complexity of the body. I am so grateful that I have one that works, that god did not see fit to give me any major infirmities or defects. It's one of those things I take for granted far too often.

I have discovered a new favorite past-time, well rediscovered... I have recently started listening to audiobooks again. so far I have read... well listened to 4 books this month; Coraline, Howl's Moving Castle, City of Ember, and Ella Enchanted. I'm in the middle of Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. It's fun because I can listen to them all the time, like while trekking from one end of campus to the other, or while driving to and from work. While it's not exactly reading, it's kind of like it...

I was talking with a friend the other day who shared many of the same things I am going through in my life. She stated that up through High school, life was fairly strait forward, you go to school, then the next step is the next grade, then you graduate, go to college, and go on a mission (or get married). she said that since she had returned from her mission, she is at a loss as to what she is to do in her life, and is somewhat afraid to take a step in any specific direction for fear that she would miss an opportunity... I felt like I was listening to a recording of my own thoughts. I have thought about those types of things quite a bit lately.

Life really is good, isn't it? why do we sometimes forget that? why do we get so caught up in our own selfish lives that we forget to love, and find joy in life? why do I ask so many questions and yet so often feel like I don't want the true answers... I think all too often we know the solutions to many tough questions and obstacles in our lives, but we are too afraid,or self conscious, or preoccupied, or just plain too lazy to take action.

Just some food for thought.

Wow I can't believe I wrote such a big entry again. I guess I had a lot on my mind. Don't get too used to this. it's just a fluke, perhaps left over motivation from the New Years holiday, or whatever.

Well, until next time, Thanks for reading, and remember to stay safe and happy.

Here we go again...

Happy New Year!!!

Here I am yet again; it's been months since my last update. Fortunately it's a new year, and so time to make resolutions, and new beginnings.

to begin this year of blogging, I've decided to give the current status of ME, I mean it is my blog and all, so I think I am entitled.

I am currently (still) an art major at UVU, with three or so semesters until I graduate. I have been considering getting a minor in music, it would most likely add another semester, but since I don't really know what I'm doing when I graduate, I'm mostly okay with that idea. I'll know better at the end of this semester.

I still have both of my jobs, and both are going fairly well. See the nifty picture? That's me at thanksgiving point in front of one of the projectors I run (looks impressive doesn't it?)

I recently got a calling as an Elders Quorum instructor. I have taught once so far, i usually enjoy teaching lessons in church, and this ward is no exception.

It should also be noted that I am still single, and looking to change that, but until then, I really do love my singles ward, my roommates, and my apartment, really I have no reason to complain, or stress, the lord has it in his hands.

Last month I was involved in 'A Christmas Carol' presented by Center Street Musical Theater. It was their last show, as they went out of business. I have done a handful of shows over these past two years at center street, and met a lot of great people and had many very wonderful experiences with them. It's been sad to see them go.

Speaking of theater, I have no idea when I will do another show, not this semester unfortunately, I will be working every night after school. I'm going to miss it, it's a good way for me to unwind (which seems strange considering how stressful it is at the same time). I'm sure this will be a blessing in disguise because it will help to force me to use my free time on homework. (shudder)

now for 2009!

I got my car paid off!
I have set quite a few resolutions this year, which include things I should be doing anyway, such as; reading scriptures, praying, Practicing music, doing art, etc. etc. regularly, as in daily. small things I should be doing anyway, but somewhere along the way I started to slack. But hey, that's what the new years celebration is all about, making a new start, and being the people we want to be! so this year you can ask me how they are going and I will tell you that it's going great!

I am so looking forward to this new year and the new adventures it brings, so buckle up, and hold on tight, because this is going to be my year, Just wait and see.

Thanks for reading, and tune in really soon for the exciting happenings of 2009!!

whoops, I'm Slacking again

ok, so I have a tendency to get mildly annoyed when my favorite blogs and websites don't get updated very often, and here I am with no updates since the end of july... guess I can't complain anymore.

so here is the quick update; I moved to a new apartment about a month ago with some guys I already knew, thus avoiding the 'random roommate gamble'. The new place is sweet, it's quiet duplex in the back of a culdesac. I am really loving it here. I Started a new semester of school, and am still working my two jobs. I am finally supposed to get some of my work to actually go live at woogi world very soon, like in the next week (but that's what I said a month ago) but hey I get paid for working anyway.

so what can I say, life is good, and I am keeping busy. Oh and have aI mentioned lately that I love the Gospel? because it's True!

until next time my faithful readers!

a much needed recharge...I think

So I just got back a few days ago from camping all week with my family. It was great! Part of it was spent in Yellowstone, I loved being out in nature and seeing the amazing landscape. pictures just can't do justice to it. it was beautiful.
Camping has a way of putting certain things into perspective, like making you extremely grateful for a clean soft bed, a nice hot shower, and life without cell-phones (does that exist?)
Overall though, it was great to take my first real long vacation in about 3 years. it gave me a much needed recharge... except that I seem to be lacking motivation to work this week. Maybe I need a vacation.

Priceless

to be completely unoriginal and cliche:

New windshield -$180

New ball joint and alignment - $200

registration renewal -$120

Driving a safe and Legal car- Priceless... actually more than $500 dollars when all is said and done. That was the story of my weekend, emission and inspection which meant repairs. oh the joys of owning a car.

but in other financial news, I got a new Job! well, sort of. I had an interview for a freelance graphic artist job for the website http://www.woogiworld.com/ honestly I didn't really wow them at the interview, but my friend works for them and has some pull, so they are giving me a two month trial. But I am confident in my skills, and I think they will keep me on. I also had an interview at another company for graphic artist... the interview was ok, but my lack of experience probably hurt my chances, but i will find out later this week.

So Life is treating me well, and I am happy. so I really can't complain

oh, and as an update to my last post, the day after i posted it, my arm bruised up, a lot. all around my elbow, and up my tricep it may be one for the record books. it looks totally gross, and multi colored (the way bruises do). it's so cool

until next time, stay happy and eat your vegetables!

the joys of being a poor college kid

Like almost every other college student, I am trying to be creative when it comes to making some extra spending cash. Like many, I have decided to try my hand at selling plasma for some (semi)quick cash.
Really, it's not bad, you get used to being stuck with a needle, and all you do is sit there and watch whatever random movie they happen to be playing at the time.
I am a great candidate for it as well, I am very healthy and I have monstrously huge bulging veins which makes them easy to find and easy to poke.
but every once in a while things don't go so smoothly. for example, yesterday I had a slow draw, as in the fluids weren't flowing as quickly as desirable, so the guy pushed the needle a bit deeper into my arm (yeah, ouch) that went worked for a few minutes, but then things started slowing again, only this time, my arm started getting a bit more tender than usual, and started swelling up a bit... yeah, that's generally not a good sign. See, when there is excess pressure in your vein (like if a needle is in too deep and touching the other side of the vein) then fluids start leaving the vein and going into the tissue causing swelling, tenderness, and possible bruising.
They pulled the needle out, went to the right arm, and finished my session. Lucky me, i got to have both arms wrapped, which looked super cool, (I guess) and I get a more-sore-than-usual left arm, which will be tender for a few days... but it's not bruised yet.

stupid? painful? maybe, but hey gotta keep life interesting, so I'm going back again this week, gotta buy some concert tickets, and it's some quick cash.

ah, the joys of being a poor college student. in a few years I won't be able to get away with this

New place, and a new calling

Amazing how life tends to keep things interesting. on Sunday morning I got a call about an hour before church saying that the stake president wanted to meet with me... you always know that one is trouble... so long story short, I got a calling to be the ward Executive Secretary. But no worries, the lord will help me out, and it will be great.

in other mildy life altering news. I got approved for my new apartment, It's a pretty nice little duplex, way nicer than most student housing I have seen, and reasonably priced. I am really excited. I finally know where I'm living in the fall, just a few blocks from where I live now. I sign a lease this weekend to seal the deal!

until next time
this is Daniel, Signing out!

Miranda-Jayne

Despite all the rantings of my last post, I am loving life. And right now I am fortunate enough to be dating a really great girl. How did we meet, you ask? well sit down and get comfy because I need to rewind a bit to give you all the whole picture...

In December, through a fortunate series of unexpected happenings, I was privileged enough to be in "A Wonderful Life" cast opposite MJ. but despite how convincing we may have been on stage, it was not love at first sight or anything like that. in fact we were both dating other people at the time. we were just friends

We would car pool to our many of our rehearsals, and every now and then I would bring breakfast for her because she would rarely if ever ate breakfast before our 9 am Saturday rehearsals. It was approximately a twenty minute drive to Springville where the theater was, so we got to know each other fairly well and occasionally, we would hang out after a performance, just one on one because this was not much of a party cast. It was like therapy, we could vent to each about how stressful the show was, or our individual lives were. We had a great friendship.

On closing night of the show, no one wanted to party, so MJ and I just hung out. we got some fast food, ran some errands, drank hot chocolate, Laughed (cried a bit as we were sad to see the show end) and just talked... until about 5 AM if memory serves me correctly.

MJ said "I'm gonna miss doing doing the show with you, and just hanging out. we should still be friends even though the show is over" to which I replied something like "yeah, like that's going to happen. don't get me wrong, you're fun, but we probably won't much of see each other even though we live just down the street" "yeah, your probably right" agreed MJ, Laughing.
"well, see you around"
"yeah, don't be a stranger"
"we seriously should hang out though"
"OK, call me sometime"
"you too"
(etc.)

after the run of a wonderful life, as i expected, we didn't see to much of each other. an occasional text message, or facebook message, but that was it. Which was fine, because I will remind you, I was not romantically interested. (don't get me wrong, I thught she was Super Cute, and Fun, and all that, just not for me...)

She went home to California in February, and so i still didn't hear from her until I randomly got a text: "I'm back from California, let's play"(on a side note, you can read about her California trip on her blog http://miranda-jayne.blogspot.com/ Which she needs to update -hint, hint, MJ) So I invited her to join my brother Kevin and I for Saturday breakfasts after my morning art class, why break tradition? after a few weeks of Saturday breakfasts, my room-mate got in on the action, 'how about we all do dinner on Such and such a night' so we went from once a week to twice, then three times or more every week, Saturdays, Sunday nights, usually. and an occasional Monday night before she had a performance at the theater.

During all this time, our friends (mostly theater friends) asked how long we had been dating, and why we were keeping it behind everyone else's backs. to which we would both scoff and say that we were not dating, we were just friends, that there was no interest other than friendship, and that frankly we would not be anything more than just friends.

This went on for a month or so (it's all blended together in my mind) but fast forward to May 5th we were watching 'the Three Amigos' a perfect movie for cinco de Mayo. we were sitting next to each other on the couch and we realised how very close we were sitting... she put her head on my shoulder... I put my arm around her... and -

GROSS this is getting Mushy, Ewww. - anyway, two mildly awkward days later we decided to start dating (awkward, because I was trying to figure out for sure that this was where I wanted this friendship to go) and we both laughed about the fact that we would be eating our words from the last six months.

and now here we are dating for just over a month after being friends for six or so. I chose to do some Grimm Brothers fairy tales. All the illustrations in this class were done with acrylic on illustration board. I discovered that painting is not my forte.

This one, for 'The Frog Prince' is actually mixed media. I used acrylic, as well as pastels. I was trying to copy a style that looked like a crayon drawing done by a child. overall I like the design, but the execution leaves a bit to be desired.

This Painting is from the fairy tale 'Snow White and Rose red' which, if you are not familiar with the story has a little dwarf who keeps getting his beard caught in things. It's required for all art majors, and unfortunately, I am no exception.

Now, Don't get me wrong I love photography, but I really don't have the patience for traditional photography, it's a true art. I have a great respect, and appreciation to anyone who can master the dark room. me I'll take digital any day.

Personal feelings aside, here are some photos I took for my final in photo class. The assignment was to take photos of whatever subject we wanted to, and make everything perfect. you know, lighting, focus, and (the hard part) make a perfect print. Not so easy for me, but hey I passed the class, and now have some photos to share.

Oh, right I decided to do self portrait as my subject, yeah I guess I'm stuck on myself, but hey everyone loves pictures of themselves right? This first one is from last Semester, I never did find the Model File, but I found one render that I did. Yeah it's Hellboy. not a bad little model. seeing as it was my first organic model, it was a bit more complex than simple spheres and boxes. As you can see I didn't do any special texture mapping, just some basic color textures. all in all, I like how the model turned out.

I enjoyed modeling Hellboy so much, that I decided to try it again this semester. This time, the modeling process went much quicker. I'm not sure it turned out quite as good, but I was really trying to focus on the texturing, and UV mapping this time around. The results are ok, it has it's issues, but I am pretty pleased with my first UV textured model.

on a side note, I just took some photos of my old figure drawings and head drawings, so they will be up here soon

Glass!!

here are two examples of a super cool (yet Surprisingly Simple) model of some shot Glasses.

so why, do you ask am I putting two images up here of the same model?

Well the first one is made with a spot light, and this second one uses a new lighting technique called HDRI lighting, which is basically an image based lighting technique where all the light information comes from an image, no other lights (such as spotlights, or directional lights) need to be placed in the scene.

that said, I did put a spot light in the second image, and the big green ball is there so I could see the effect of the image. (lighting quality changes based on the image, and you can also see the image reflected in the ball)

Another thing to note is the cool wood texture on the table with a small bump map applied to it. (bumpmapping makes flat images look, well...bumpy)

Again rendered using Mental Ray, and there are admittedly problems with the liquid in the rear glass it just doesn't look right) but overall I like this image. it looks nifty, if I do say so myself.

more texturing and lighting

<img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; This is not as easy as one would think.
This other one is obviously just the same chapel with some lighting and some fancy purplish fog. Actually there is nothing fancy here, these are great examples of bad modeling, but most problems are hidden by the chosen view.

For anyone wondering on the specifics, the chapel is a simple polygon model, I used a spotlight for the interior view, and point lights for the exterior view.
